Golfing in Italy

Italy is one of the most scenic places in the world in which to play golf and boasts some 225 beautiful and challenging courses right across the country. A golf holiday in Italy is not something that can be generalised, as the spectacularly diverse landscape presents so many different opportunities. All these options are different, but every one benefits from fantastic Italian gastronomy and amazing hospitality, leading so many golfers to choose Italy for their golf holiday.

The Napoli Golf Club in Pozzuoli, in Campania some 10km west of Naples offers a pleasant 9-hole course, offering a total of 6,300 yards of golfing enjoyment, with a par of 70.

Bologna Golf Club, in Emilia-Romagna, some 20km to the west of the city, features a popular 18-hole, par-72 course, some 6,751 yards in length.

Sun-kissed Calabria features few courses, but one of the best is San Michele Golf Club in Cetraro, 50km north of Cosenza, on the Tyrrhenian coast, which has nine holes and 2,921 yards and a par of 70.

Lazio, the region in which Rome is located, has numerous fine courses, only to be expected of such a popular tourist region. Some 20km south-east of Rome lies the Castelgandolfo Golf Club, a challenging 6,591 yard course with 18 holes. A Robert Trent Jones design, the 6,628 yard, par 72 layout provides a stern test for the best players. Other facilities include driving range and practice area, tennis courts, swimming pool and a golf academy.

One of the largest clubs in this region is the Parco de Medici Golf Club, based on the site where the 15th century pontiff, Leo X, had his private hunting grounds. There aren`t many 18th fairways in the world that have the remains of a 2,000-year-old Roman building nearby. The 27 hole par 35 + 36 + 35 was designed as a perfect setting for high-level competitions and is the easiest golf club to reach from all areas of the city, just 18km from the city`s Fiumicino Airport.

Perhaps the best course near the capital is Le Querce Golf Club, an Arnold Palmer designed championship layout, some 7,070 yards in length with a par of 72. Established in 1990, it boasts some fine scenery. Its 10th hole is notable for a deep and winding stream that twice cuts through it. The tree-lined fairways are as much renowned for their beautiful wild flowers as they are for the golf. The mountain backdrop makes this a truly picturesque setting to play the game.

One of the Italy`s most highly-regarded clubs is Biella Le Betulle, established in 1958 and some 17km outside Biella Piedmont. At 7,031yds, with a par of 73, Le Betulle is notable for its challenging undulations and beautiful fairways, which are dotted with oak, chestnut and fir trees and set against stunning mountain scenery.
